12 points above Reading.

Here's the 2nd tier table arranged by points rather then position to give you a feel for how well Wolves are REALLY doing.
It must be 20 years since we had such a great start (and then "only" 42 points in the same number of matches).
Before the bleak wasteland of the Hayward era...

RIP Pajoba

Sad to hear that Pajoba (or PAul JOhn BArzda) died from a heart attack in his sleep on Sunday morning. Since I joined the Wolves mailing list 10 years ago, he's been there with football insight and "I'll get my coat" quality humour. He'll be missed.

Swansea... not today

I'd been looking forward to the Swansea-Wolves match since May when Swansea were promoted to the second tier and Wolves ... stayed where they were.

Back in 1986 I'd seen one such match when I still lived in Swansea (can't recall if it was the January win or October defeat). And in 2002 I drove down the M4 for a late-summer League Cup match where Cardiff-born Blake helped defeat the Swans (much to their fans' annoyance).

Now Swansea were again in a position to take on the 'mighty' Wolves - on a Saturday so no mid-week travel problems. But come the day and I'm not really up for it. Looking back I hadn't been to a Wolves match since March 2006 and that was just down the road at the Madjeski Stadium; before that April 2005 ... against Reading again. No doubt my next match will be in January 2009 when Wolves come down here next.

To explain my lack of interest I was giving myself excuses:

"It will be cold, wet and windy"
Almost right; in fact Swansea has better weather than Reading.

"It will be expensive for the train, ticket, food and drink"
I would have probably spent £80 all told; instead I spent £50 on Guitar Hero III (to get an extra guitar) and £30 on an Indian meal delivery...

"Your time could be spent more profitably on better things"
I fell for this one. Except on Friday night I stayed up until 4am the following morning playing on the Xbox so didn't get up until nearly 1pm. Today's main achievement has been doing the washing up. If I'd gone to the match, I would have had 5 hours on trains which could have been used to prepare for my D&D game on Wednesday.

"What if you go all that way and Wolves lose"
It's a 300 mile round trip so not exactly close; Wolves lost 3-1.

{Sigh}

Heroes and Villains

These images from the HSBC adverts at the airport attracted my attention.
I know the stripes are a bit light but you get the idea...

My first home match at the Golden Palace went well - I didn't drive. Taking the train to Wolverhampton is just so easy in comparison to driving up. This time the railway station was shut for repairs and I STILL got to the match with ages to spare. I took the tram from Birmingham to Wolves - such novelties really add to the day.

This was my first time in the Stan Cullis stand - not too great with the sun in your eyes so much but now I've managed to watch a match from all 5 stands.

The match itself was a mix of emotions - depression as we conceded, elation as we scored. Missing a penalty really cheered us up no end...

but in the end Cameron came off the bench to rescue a point for us.

Afterwards I stalked players for autographs (unseemly at my age but what the hell..). Got a nice photo of new signing Seol Ki-Hyun

and exchanged a few words with Jason Roberts (Wigan striker who never made the Wolves first team under McGhee). He was amazed to see the fresh-faced photo of himself on the front of the E&S:

Often when waiting outside the ground after the match there will be a small rush of people to get the autograph of somebody and you think "who the hell is that?" but you play along. Afterwards people asked me "who was that?" that they had just obtained the signature of, so I wasn't alone. In this case I did some detective work later and found I'd been talking to Bobby Thompson, a famous player from the 60s. It embarrasses me that I know so little club history...

The day ended with a few pints with my old friend from Paisley, JJ:
