GuilFest 07 - Squeeze

After the Theatre Tent, Samantha and I watched a token small band - it was a music festival. :-)
"Moon Unit" were apparently ‘retro-futurism with a contemporary touch’, whatever that is. The problem with small bands in general is that you don't know the songs and usually they are a small band because they don't have anything that makes them stand out. They do help you pass the time, though, until you can move onto something else ... like Magerita slush puppies. Yum.

Soon after it was time for the headlining band, Squeeze. Everybody knows at least a few of their songs so you can sing along but I don't really like their singing style or song contents (post Cool for Cats).

So, in summary, GuilFest for me was 6 comedians, 2 bands, two plays, and a lovely curry for lunch. And it didn't rain. was £40 for the ticket worth it? Overall, yes. £3.50 for beers? Definitely not.

Gee thanks John, I'm the singer of Moon UNit and i feel suitably patronised being a member of a 'token small band', as you put it. Just to clarify what retro-futurism with a contemporary touch is: it's a joke! get it? retro-future-contemporary. It's my way of saying that iit's not important how people classify our music. i just hope they like it. I hope you liked it, although i suspect you don't as you implied that the songs were forgetable. But, oh well, that's ok - everybody's got their own tastes, haven't they?

I'm glad you enjoyed the festival overall and i agree that the beer was over priced - yes token small bands had to pay, too. It's a hard life.
god bless ya and the devil miss ya, to coin a retro-futuristic phrase (with a contemporary touch, obviously).

Thanks for responding in such a positive manner. I can see that the way I've written the blog posting wouldn't put any band I mentioned in a good light. I didn't mean to imply that everybody else was a big band and that you were a token small band signed up by the Festival for appearances' sake. You were the band I happened to see when touring the site. My daughter enjoyed the set and ensured we stayed for all the songs; she even checked out your website (http://www.myspace.com/MoonUnitPop) when we got home.

The comments I made were generalisations about small bands to try and explain why the majority of the bands at GuilFest are not really for me. I spend half of my time in the comedy tent and then watch any bands on the main stage that I have an interest in which most years means no drive to venture into the marquee tents.

I actually feel for bands that play festivals - they can end up performing to a scattering of people like me in a large tent with only a handful of people knowing what the band is about. And this gets even worse when the main stages are in full swing.

I wouldn't take my blog as being a review of your band in any way. If you'd played a gig like The Fez in Reading instead, for example, I can imagine my comments being very different as your band would be the focus (rather then the festival). More exposure to a band (and easy to pick up CDs afterwards) always makes for a better opinion.

Yes, "retro-futurism with a contemporary touch" is obviously a joke now that you confirm it.
The problem at the time was that I made the mistake of assuming two things:
- (1) there was a futurist musical genre from the past that you could be playing that would therefore make you retro
- (2) it was just pseudo-intellectualism that bands can sometimes put into their PR.

Cheers
John
